Winter's Breeze: 2020 Visual Art WINNER

ART BY REBECCA STEVENSON.

ARTIST STATEMENT

For my piece ‘Winter’s Breeze,’ I was heavily inspired by the art nouveau style and the art on tarot cards, especially with the subject matter of this piece and the way everything flows together.

I came up with the idea from a drawing prompt about ‘seasons’, it was during the thick of winter so I thought it would be perfect to draw this winter goddess creature, blowing an icy breeze down to the world from the heavens above. I tried to allude to images of nature and clouds in the picture with a lot of curves (like that in her hair) which is meant to parallel the image of storm clouds. Having those small creatures on her coat is also meant to lend itself to the regal and otherworldly nature of this goddess character, and harken back to the strange designs on some tarot cards.

Style played a huge role in creating this piece because I don’t typically draw this way, but for this particular subject, I thought this was the best way to display just how grand this almost folkore-y type of character is.
